The white paper highlights the growing importance of Medical Science Liasons (MSLs) which has been primarily driven by the demand to communicate scientific information, especially as biopharmaceutical innovation becomes more complex and shifts towards personalized medicine. MSLs are members of the Medical Affairs team and act as highly trained scientific experts forming a critical link between pharmaceutical companies and external stakeholders, including healthcare professionals, regulatory authorities, and patients. Their primary role is to communicate complex scientific and clinical information in a credible, non-promotional manner, while also gathering insights that inform product development and market access strategies.
Unlike sales representatives, MSLs focus on scientific dialogue rather than promotion, helping ensure that information is shared in a compliant and evidence-based manner. MSLs contribute across the entire product lifecycle, starting from early development, where they build relationships with key opinion leaders, to pre-launch, where they provide the foundation for launch and market access. During launch and post-launch, they support ongoing medical education and the operational planning for real-world evidence generation.
MSLs also play an important role in bringing different stakeholders together and helping address barriers to patient access, particularly in healthcare systems facing cost and regulatory challenges. For example, one case study highlighted how an oncology MSL team deployed across Europe was able to drive high-quality scientific engagement and provide insights that supported both product development and market access.
Overall, effective MSL deployment enhances patient access to therapies by bridging the gap between clinical research and real-world application. MSLs play an important role in ensuring that innovative treatments are both understood and appropriately used in clinical practice.
